About Department

The Department of English at Larambha College, established in the 2010-11 academic year, offers comprehensive undergraduate programmes in English, including Honours course. Situated in a rural setting, the department is dedicated to delivering education in English language and literature. Teaching English in this environment presents unique challenges and opportunities due to the primary medium of instruction being Odia and Sambalpuri. This linguistic background can complicate the transition to English, but also offers a significant opportunity to impact students’ educational journeys. The language barrier is a primary challenge, with students often struggling due to limited prior exposure. To address this, faculty employ bilingual teaching methods and incorporate local culture into the curriculum, making content relatable and engaging. Despite the rural setting, the department provides digital tools, language labs, and online resources to enhance learning experience.

  • Study Tour
The Department of English has conducted two study tours to Kolkata. The first study tour took place during the 2019-20 session, where students attended the Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival-2020. The second study tour was organized during the 2023-24 session, including visits to Kolkata and Visva-Bharati University in Shantiniketan, West Bengal. These tours provided students with valuable exposure to literary events and academic environments, enriching their educational experience.

The Department of English at Larambha College envisions a future where students from rural and marginalized backgrounds, despite the challenges of learning English in a primary language environment of Odia and Sambalpuri, achieve proficiency and succeed both academically and professionally. We aim to bridge cultural and linguistic gaps through simple, effective teaching methods.

  • To make the students capable of reading critically, writing clearly and exercising their faculty of imagination effectively to interpret, evaluate, analyze and contextualize the literary and the social texts.
