Set against a backdrop of picturesque and tranquil rural landscapes, Larambha College owes its existence to its founder, Late Braja Mohan Panda, a visionary, philanthropist, educator, agriculturalist, and nationalist. Established in 1947 as an Open School, it evolved into the first non-government residential science college in the state in 1964, coinciding with Shri Krishna Janmastami, with initial affiliation to Utkal University, Bhubaneswar. In 1967, the affiliation shifted to the newly formed Sambalpur University, Jyoti Vihar. This transformation marked not just a milestone but a significant movement aimed at advancing education in a rural setting for the underprivileged and marginalized communities. Breaking away from the traditional urban-focused education model, Late Braja Mohan Panda envisioned an institution akin to Shantiniketan.
At its inception, the college served as a primary feeder institution for VSSUT, Burla (the state’s first engineering college), VSS Medical College, Burla and P.G Departments of Sambalpur University. Celebrating its 59 years of excellence, the college marked its Golden Jubilee in 2015.
The college’s serene campus, located in the Larambha Panchayat headquarters of Bargarh district, creates a lasting impression on all visitors. Catering mainly to students from rural areas, Larambha College offers educational opportunities at both Higher Secondary and Degree levels across Arts, Science, Commerce, and Vocational Education. It is recognized under UGC 2(f) and 12(B). Over the years, Larambha College has achieved significant milestones, including being the only non-government, non-autonomous college in the state to receive the CPE honor from UGC in 2010 during the XI plan. Situated on an expansive 13.21-acre campus in Larambha village, Bargarh district, the college is conveniently located 30 km from Sambalpur and 35 km from Bargarh, with excellent connectivity via National and State Highways. The college boasts a history of producing numerous achievers and received a B+ grade in its first cycle of accreditation and a B++ in the second cycle.
