About Department

The Department of History, which began offering an Honours program in the 1998-99 academic session with just 16 seats, has significantly grown over the years. Initially, only 3 students enrolled in the first session, but today, the department accommodates 24 seats for the History (Hons) course. For the 2023-24 session, the department has 20 students in the 1st year, 23 in the 2nd year, and 21 in the 3rd year. As a premier subject within the social sciences, History attracts many students who are keen on pursuing higher studies and aiming for careers in civil services and teaching. Additionally, some students are passionate about archaeology and research, furthering their exploration of historical studies.

The vision of the Department of History is to cultivate a deep understanding of historical events and perspectives among undergraduate students, fostering critical thinking and analytical skills. We aim to provide a comprehensive education that connects historical knowledge with contemporary issues, preparing students for advanced studies and diverse career paths. By emphasizing the significance of historical inquiry and research, our department strives to inspire students to contribute meaningfully to fields such as civil services, education, and archaeology, thereby enriching their academic and professional journeys.

  • To equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary for advanced studies and careers in fields such as civil services, teaching, and archaeology.

Dr. Subodh Mendali, an alumnus of the department, has been awarded a PhD in Archaeology and is currently working as Assistant Professor at the Central University of Uttarakhand. Two students, Anil Meher and Ananta Pradhan, secured 1st position in their +3course and were honored as Gold Medalists. Satyajeet Pradhan is currently studying at the Central University of Hyderabad. Anil Sahu has completed his PG degree at Ravenshaw College. Miss Tapaswini Sahu, Miss Devaki Naik, and Padmanava Behera are now serving as SSB lecturers at Chendipada College, Roth College, and Pallishree College, respectively.
